Avis Rent-A-Car, based in Parsippany, is rolling out a pilot program in Las Vegas and Orlando that puts mobility scooters in the trunks of rental cars. Customers can also have the units delivered to them. Mobility scooters, which are battery operated, have four wheels and can carry up to 250 pounds. Avis said it is the first rental car company to package a mobility scooter with a rental car. The scooters are the newest offering from the company’s Avis Access lineup of products for the disabled. Avis Access, which launched in 2003, adds utilities to cars including panoramic mirrors and swivel seats. Scootaround, a Canada based company that rents scooters and wheelchairs throughout the country, is supplying the mini-vehicles to Avis. Customers will be charged an additional $40.00 per rental day in Las Vegas and $50.00 per rental day in Orlando.
